It started out big - about the brand

The origins of Carhartt WIP date back to 1889, when Mr Hamilton Carhartt bought sewing machines and hired five employees to manufacture garments for workmen. As you may have guessed, these products were mainly dungarees made of denim and stiff, rough canvas known as “duck.” “Duck” quickly went on to become the trademark material associated with Carhartt WIP. But the beginning was not as promising as Hamilton expected. What hopeless his business was an ingenious reaction to failure, namely... a simple market research. The entrepreneur asked the workmen what they needed and used their straightforward responses to amend his strategy. Based on this survey, he modified his product portfolio and came up with products that made the company grow.

Carhartt WIP - first steps in streetwear

Despite numerous obstacles, the brand has managed to stay afloat. In the 980s the brand reached the streets of New York. Apparel by Carhartt became especially popular among rappers. Once we’re at it, a certain interesting thing happened in the 1990s. When this streetwear legend started to collaborate with musicians, a unique trio got together to come up with new ideas in fashion: Stussy x Carhartt x Tommy Boy.

W.I.P is for Work in Progress

The brand was becoming increasingly popular also because it was often featured in music videos. The demand for Carhartt products rocketed not only in the USA, but also in Europe. One name has to be mentioned on this occasion: it’s Edwin Faeh. Together with his twin brother, Laurine, he founded Big Star in 1974. In 1994 he retired and decided to part ways with this brand. That’s when he founded another company – Work In Progress, which is the only distributor of Carhatt in Europe.
