The Adidas Ultraboost has grown from a single shoe to a massive footwear collection, spanning everything from running shoes to everyday sneakers and even baseball cleats. Before it was a brand, the shoe originally had a Green name–The Adidas “Energy Boost.”

Released in 2013, the Energy Boost was a vehicle for launching Adidas’ Boost foam, a revolutionary new midsole cushioning material that offered more energy return and longer-lasting shock absorption than other midsole materials at the time. Two years later, Adidas created the original Ultraboost, which doubled down with even more Boost cushioning. The shoe (and the foam) established Adidas as a major player in running innovation, and other brands have raced to release their own high-performance midsoles.

Adidas originally introduced the Ultraboost as a running shoe, and the line still revolves around a flagship trainer, the Ultraboost Light. That said, Adidas also puts Boost foam in a wide array of shoes each year, including fashion-forward collaborations with designers like Stella McCartney and experimental projects like the returnable Made to Be Remade. The Best Adidas Ultraboost shoes include great options runners, walkers and everyday wear—especially for style-conscious sneakerheads.

Best Adidas Ultraboost Shoes

The Expert: I have tested running and outdoor gear for years, both as an editor at Runner’s World and as a freelance reviewer for InsideHook, Men’s Journal, and other outlets. I’ve written more about running shoes than any other category, and I have firsthand experience running in models from a range of brands, including Adidas.

What to Consider When Shopping for Adidas Ultraboost Running Shoes

Adidas releases a new lineup of Ultraboost shoes every year, which include casual sneakers (even sandals) and shoes designed specifically for running. Runners have mixed opinions on the Ultraboost brand. Some feel they’re too heavy and too firm–they certainly don’t have the soft, pillowy feel of trainers like the Hoka Bondi or Adidas Shorts Malha adidas 3-Stripes AEROREADY.

But if you prefer a firmer shoe–maybe you’re used to running in Under Armour or Reebok kicks–the Ultraboost could work well for you. Better yet, the very firm Boost cushioning is well-suited to low-impact activities like walking, where you aren’t moving as fast and putting as much stress on your feet and joints.

How We Selected the Best Adidas Ultraboost Shoes

To pick the best Adidas Ultraboost shoes, I studied the brand’s Ultraboost lineup (as well as a few other shoes made with Boost foam) and spoke with a brand rep to get more info on this year’s models and their key distinguishing features. I also analyzed data and tester notes from Runner’s World reviews, considered RW editor feedback, and drew on my knowledge of the running shoe market. These models showcase Adidas’ premier Ultraboost features, like Boost cushioning and the LEP torsion system. Some of the picks in this guide are great for training runs. Others are ideal for walking and casual wear.

Replacing the Ultraboost 22, the Ultraboost Light is the current flagship Ultraboost running shoe. As the name implies, the new design features updates to trim the shoe’s weight. It utilizes an updated version of the Boost midsole foam called Light Boost that’s firmer, but substantially lighter than standard Boost foam. Made with molded thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) beads that have been infused with ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) material, Adidas claims that the Light Boost midsole in the Ultraboost Light is 30 percent lighter than the midsole in the Ultraboost 22.

It also features the Linear Energy Push system, an embedded TPU plate that resists lateral torsion. Together, the foam and LEP plate work together to keep your feet properly aligned within the shoe and create a stable, responsive feel while running.

The Ultraboost Light’s sock-like upper was divisive in RW testing: Some runners loved it, while others reported that it created uncomfortable rubbing on their heels. If you like a thinner, less robust upper, this shoe will work well for you. Overall, it’s a capable trainer for shorter runs and a solid choice for walking, too.

The Pureboost 23 is a budget-friendly daily trainer that serves up a comfy, moderately cushioned ride. It features a Boost midsole to absorb impact forces. On the bottom, the rubber outsole generates confident grip on the pavement. The mesh upper has large pores over the forefoot and around the lacing eyelets, creating airflow so your feet stay comfortable on longer runs.

While it lacks the LEP torsion system of the Ultraboost Light, the Pureboost has a heel counter to provide a more supportive fit at the back of the foot, and there’s plenty of padding around the ankle for a comfortable feel while running or walking.

Ultraboost models can be pricey, so if you want to try Boost foam without committing to an expensive pair of shoes, the Pureboost is the way to go.

The X_PLRBOOST is a new casual sneaker with Adidas’ Boost midsole that delivers a stylish, well-cushioned ride you can wear all day. The midsole features a generous helping of Boost foam for excellent shock absorption, which is paired with an embedded midsole plate for added support under your feet.

The upper is made with a trio of materials. The primary mesh fabric creates a secure, but breathable wrap around the foot. A neoprene collar creates soft, comfortable padding around the heel and ankle. Lastly, a suede patch on the tongue gives you a little grip when you go to put your shoes on. The shoe looks good, too: The layered upper materials give it a distinctive style, and it’s available in a dozen unique colorways to match any wardrobe.

Reviewers on Reddit report the shoe serves up an impressively comfortable ride—softer than the regular Ultraboost. It’s worth noting, though, that the fit runs a bit long. You may want to consider sizing down when ordering yours.

Adidas is now on its 23rd iteration of the Ultraboost, but if you miss the fit and feel of the original, you’re in luck: The brand has reissued that groundbreaking shoe in 2023 as the Ultraboost 1.0.

Unsurprisingly, the retro design is heavier than the Ultraboost Light, but features everything we loved about adidas Club 3 Stripe T Shirt Ladies. The Boost midsole creates reliable shock absorption with plenty of response, and the shoe has good flexibility, especially in the forefoot. On the bottom, the Ultraboost 1.0 features a gridded rubber outsole, and its full-coverage design ensures excellent traction and good durability.

The upper has large pores over the forefoot to promote airflow and keep your feet cool. It also offers support: Overlays connect the lace eyelets to the footbed and create a snug fit around the middle of your foot. A heel counter also stabilizes your Achilles and ankles for a locked-in feel. This shoe is all about responsive cushioning, and although its hefty weight makes it less-suited for faster paces, its firm, bouncy ride is ideal for casual runs and day-to-day training.

Pros
  • Unique midsole promotes smooth transitions
  • Supportive ride
Cons
  • Too heavy for speedwork

Key Specs

The Ultra 4D is the black sheep of the Ultraboost lineup. Instead of Boost foam, Adidas created a unique 3D-printed lattice structure for the midsole that absorbs impacts and promotes smooth strides without the need for traditional cushioning foam. The lattice is unlike anything else you’ll see in any other shoe, but it isn’t just a gimmick.

According to Simon Lockett, Category Director for Adidas Running, the highly flexible TK lattice is formed from many criss-cross “bowtie” shapes. When compressed, these shapes redirect vertical impact forces into forward motion for efficient heel-toe transitions to help you keep up your pace for longer.

Reviewers on Reddit note the Ultra 4D feels even firmer and more supportive than other Ultraboost shoes, and weighs slightly more. Its hefty weight makes it less suitable for speedwork, but the shoe will function well for slower-paced training runs or walking, especially if you prefer a flexible sole and a responsive feel in your sneakers.

Using recycled plastic in footwear sounds like a win for sustainability, but it won’t do much for the environment if the shoes wind up in a landfill. A truly sustainable product is designed from square one to be recycled once it wears out. Adidas took that approach with the Ultraboost Made to Be Remade 2.0.

As the name implies, this shoe is built to be recycled. Once you wear them down, scan the QR code on the tongue to access instructions for returning them to the company. When they arrive, the shoes will be cleaned, shredded, melted down, and pressed into pellets of raw material for new products. The innovative program shares a lot of ideas with On’s replaceable Cloudneo shoe program, which also launched in 2023.

Overall, the Made to be Remade 2.0 looks and feels similar to the other Ultraboost models. The midsole is crafted from standard Boost foam, and it features the LEP torsion system for a supportive, stable ride. Up top, a knit upper creates a comfy and secure wrap around the foot. Cycling through pair after pair of running shoes generates lots of waste, but the Made to Be Remade 2.0 offers a thoughtful alternative to kicking tired old pairs into the garbage.

Fashion designer Stella McCartney has a longstanding partnership with Adidas, and they’ve produced many fashionable riffs on the Ultraboost over the years. Their latest collab, the Ultraboost Speed, combines top-tier performance features with eye-popping aesthetics. These unisex shoes come in three bold colorways—all black, bright orange, and fluorescent yellow—and feature a mesh upper with undulating plastic overlays that give the shoes an organic look. According to Adidas, the shoes are inspired by “psychedelic trees” and camouflage.

Runners might roll their eyes, but there’s legitimate tech underneath: The shoe features the same Light Boost foam used in the Ultraboost Light, as well as the LEP torsion system for added support. On the bottom, the Ultraboost Speed rides on a grippy and durable Continental rubber outsole, so it can handle some serious mileage.
